Our location
Touch of Love is based in the district of Campo Verde, population of 19,696. Campo Verde comprises part of the 348,404 inhabitants of the Province Coronel Portillo, which is included in the 468,922 persons of the Department Ucayali (per 2003 statistics). The closest town is Campo Verde (4 km distant), while the closest city is Pucallpa, 38 kilometers from the project site.
AMOR Projects has purchased 247 acres of land located at kilometer 38 of
Carretera Federico Basadre/Carretera Central (the main road between
Pucallpa and Lima). This land, known as "38" or the "project site" is
to be used for medical facilities, trade school and agricultural development.
Pucallpa is a third-world city of more than 200,000 inhabitants and the fastest growing jungle town in Peru. Located on the banks of the Ucayali River, it is also a commercial center for the logging, rubber, and oil industries which finance much of its economy. Pucallpa boasts very little tourism, although there are various native villages and places of interest nearby. The city and surrounding areas have many unpaved roadways, lending to an atmosphere always heavy with dust. Many shantytowns have sprung up in and around the city, and countless motokars and taxis make the roadways buzz with activity. However, most of the stores, offices, and businesses shut down from 1-3 p.m. for a "siesta".
TRAVEL
All travel in Peru centers in the hub of Lima, Peru's capital city. All international flights make their first stop here for customs/immigration. Roads leading across the Andes Mountains to the low jungle area are in poor condition, and travel is difficult.
Travel from Lima, Peru's capital, to Pucallpa is available by ground or by air. Ground transportation by public bus takes approximately 20-24 hours to cover 864 kilometers, crossing the Andes mountain range. The views are beautiful and the fare is reasonable at an average of $17 US. Air travel entails an approximately 45-60 minute flight as the crow flies, with an average fare ranging from $100 US each way.
Touch of Love's project site is 38 kilometers from the center of Pucallpa. Transportation is available by taxi and motokar (a motorcycle with a smally buggy attached). It takes approximately 35 minutes to cover the distance.
CLIMATE
Pucallpa is located in the low jungle region of Peru's Amazon basin. Elevation is approximately 486 feet or 148 meters above sea level. The region boasts a hot and humid tropical climate with a rainy season especially marked during the summer months. Average temperatures for the Pucallpa area are between 70-90 degrees F. There are two seasons: rainy season and dry season, although it still rains during dry season. Pucallpa recieves approximately 120 inches or ten feet of rain per year, with rainy season traditionally falling between November-March. However, some years the rainy season shifts earlier or later. During rainy season, daily showers are a regular occurance. The sun may be shining while a half hour downpour soaks everyone, and then stops as suddenly as it began! There are also days when storms blow through and the weather is cloudy, rainy, and cool. Humidity is high throughout the year.
