Building Characters
Vacation Bible School continued this week as before. Even though we’re well into our second week, attendance just keeps growing. We have a nightly average of about 30 kids. Jenessa has been focusing on the Old Testament for the past two weeks and told stories like Jonah and the whale, Joseph and the coat of many colors, Moses in the River, and the Ten Plagues of Egypt. The kids have done crafts such as making an origami fish for Jonah, a paper tunic for the story of Joseph, and a little basket for the story of baby Moses. While the younger kids have kept themselves busy with stories and crafts, the older kids have been studying deeper issues such as, the Sabbath, creation, Christian dress and behavior, the health message, the state of the dead, and tithing.
In addition to all of the Bible knowledge that the kids have been receiving, we have also been teaching them some simple health messages during the time with Señor Salud. This week we learned that it’s better for our bodies and teeth if we don’t eat a lot of candy, but instead eat lots of fruits and vegetables, that picking up trash is good for the earth and for avoiding contamination of water, that it’s good to drink lots of water, and also to get lots of exercise. The kids love seeing Jonathan run out with his cape and goggles. Even the parents that come every night have been getting laughs (and knowledge) out of the goofy, but wise Señor Salud. We will continue Vacation Bible School until Tuesday night of next week (February 8).
On Thursday night Jonathan got really sick and couldn’t come to VBS to be Señor Salud. The kids were all really worried about him and missed him a lot and so on Friday night they all made Get Well Soon cards for their beloved Señor Salud. “I was not expecting it at all. It was one of those things that you grow up doing for other people but you never expect to happen to you. It definitely made me feel loved. I loved it,” said Jonathan about receiving all of the cards.
